Shoulder2wrist consultant, Mr. Sam Vollans recently attended a “Hands on” practical cadaver course where he performed Shoulder, Elbow and Radial Head replacement, IJS elbow stabilisation and Elbow fracture fixation. This course was aimed at Senior Orthopaedic Trainees, Shoulder Fellows, and Consultants. Mr. Vollans presented his surgical outcomes for total elbow arthroplasty, teaching tips and tricks of Total elbow replacement in a cadaveric lab. He also demonstrated his experience using the Nexel total elbow replacement system by Zimmer Biomet. Total elbow replacement, also known as total elbow arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to relieve pain and restore function in a severely damaged elbow joint. This procedure is typically recommended for patients who have advanced arthritis, significant joint damage due to injury, or other conditions that impair the elbow's function. During a total elbow replacement, the damaged parts of the elbow joint are removed and replaced with artificial components made of metal and plastic. These components mimic the natural movement of the elbow, allowing for smooth, pain-free motion. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and the surgeon makes an incision on the back of the elbow to access the joint. The damaged bone and cartilage are then removed, and the artificial components are implanted into the joint. Once in place, the components are secured with bone cement or by press-fitting into the bone. Total elbow replacement can provide significant relief from pain and stiffness, allowing patients to regain mobility and function in their elbow. It can also improve the quality of life for individuals who have been limited by chronic elbow pain and dysfunction. Recovery from total elbow replacement typically involves physical therapy to restore strength and range of motion in the elbow. Most patients can expect to return to their normal activities within a few months following surgery, although full recovery may take up to a year. Overall, total elbow replacement is a highly effective procedure for treating severe elbow arthritis and dysfunction, offering patients the opportunity to regain pain-free movement and enjoy a better quality of life.
